How to Measure Your Small Dog for Clothes

Buying clothes for your small dog should be fun — but getting the wrong size can be frustrating for both you and your pup. A top that's too tight is uncomfortable, and one that's too loose will fall off on the first walk! The good news is that measuring your dog for clothes is quick and easy once you know what to do.

In this guide we'll walk you through exactly how to measure your small dog for clothes, what measurements you need, and how to use them to find the perfect fit — especially for teacup, toy and small breeds.

What You'll Need

  • A soft fabric measuring tape (the kind used for sewing)
  • A helper if your dog is wriggly!
  • Treats to keep your pup still 🦴

The 3 Key Measurements for Dog Clothes

1. Back Length (the most important measurement!)

This is the measurement most dog clothing brands use to determine size. It's the distance along your dog's back from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail.

How to measure: Stand your dog up on all four paws. Place the tape at the base of the neck and run it along the spine to the base of the tail. Note this measurement in inches or centimetres.

For teacup breeds: A teacup Chihuahua might measure just 15cm (6") while a standard Chihuahua might be 20-25cm (8-10"). This is why we stock genuine 6" and 8" back length clothing in our Puppy Corner!

2. Chest Girth

This is the measurement around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs.

How to measure: Wrap the tape around your dog's chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs. Make sure you can fit two fingers under the tape — you want a comfortable fit, not too tight.

This measurement is especially important for barrel-chested breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs, who may need a larger chest size than their back length suggests.

3. Neck Girth

This is the measurement around the base of your dog's neck, where a collar would normally sit.

How to measure: Wrap the tape around the base of the neck. Again, allow two fingers of space for comfort.

This measurement matters most for polo neck tops, hoodies and all-in-ones that need to fit over the head.

Small Dog Size Guide

Here's a rough guide to typical measurements for popular small and teacup breeds:

  • Teacup Chihuahua — Back: 15cm (6"), Chest: 18-22cm
  • Standard Chihuahua — Back: 20-25cm (8-10"), Chest: 25-30cm
  • Teacup Yorkie — Back: 15-20cm (6-8"), Chest: 20-25cm
  • Pomeranian — Back: 20-25cm (8-10"), Chest: 28-33cm
  • Shih Tzu — Back: 25-30cm (10-12"), Chest: 35-40cm
  • Maltese — Back: 20-25cm (8-10"), Chest: 28-33cm
  • Miniature Dachshund — Back: 25-30cm (10-12"), Chest: 30-35cm
  • French Bulldog — Back: 30-35cm (12-14"), Chest: 45-55cm

Note: These are approximate guides only. Always measure your individual dog as sizes vary even within breeds.

Tips for Getting the Best Fit

  • Always measure before buying — never guess based on breed alone
  • When in between sizes, size up — a slightly loose fit is more comfortable than a tight one
  • Check the size chart for each brand — sizing varies between manufacturers
  • Consider the style — stretchy knit tops are more forgiving than structured jackets
  • Measure regularly — puppies grow fast! Re-measure every few weeks

What If My Dog Is Too Small for Standard Sizes?

If your dog measures under 20cm (8") in back length, you may find that most standard dog clothing ranges simply don't fit. This is incredibly common for teacup Chihuahuas, micro Pomeranians, teacup Yorkies and young puppies of small breeds.

That's exactly why we created our Puppy Corner at Isle For Dogs boutique — a dedicated collection of clothing starting from just 6" (15cm) back length, one of the smallest ranges available in the UK.
